Peerless Network Moves Headquarters to Historic Old Post Office Building

Our growth necessitated a move to a larger space. We wanted to stay downtown, and after considering several options, we chose the Old Post Office largely because we were attracted to the focus the renovation placed on reuse, reducing the carbon impact, and creating useable green spaces,” commented John Barnicle, President & CEO of Peerless Network. Since reopening in 2019 after an $800 million renovation, the historic Art Deco building, now 90% occupied, has attracted a number of marquis brands and technology companies as tenants, including

HomeChef. “In addition to the focus on environmental impacts, we are excited that our team members will experience first-hand both the history and beauty of the renovated Old Post Office,” added Barnicle. “We are also delighted that our company is part of the growing number of technology firms choosing Chicago as their home.” The history of the Old Post Office began over 100 years ago. Construction of the original building was completed in 1921 and then greatly expanded in 1932 to meet Chicago’s unprecedented postal traffic driven by the mail-order industry and Chicago-based Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs. At its peak, the post office, the largest of its kind in the world, handled 19 million pieces of mail each day. After sitting vacant for nearly 20 years, in 2016, New York developer 601W Cos. purchased the building and began renovation which created 2.5 million square feet of office and event space. The completed project was the largest reuse project in the U.S. with 97% of potential construction waste diverted from landfills. In mid 2018, the Chicago City Council approved landmark designation for the building. In addition to the extensive exterior work, the historic Van Buren lobby was fully restored, including figurative bas-relief tiles and monumental ceiling chandeliers. The newly-developed rooftop space, which is equal in length to three city blocks, includes amenities such as special event space, landscaped meadows with walking paths, as well as tennis and basketball courts. Via its fully IP-based network built, enhanced, and operated by Peerless, the company has established itself as a leading provider of telecommunications services for over 15 years.
