California high school student Krystal Horton earns company’s fourth STEM scholarship

Managed Security solutions, has named Krystal Horton as the company’s fourth STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) College Scholarship Fund winner. The 17-year-old student attending Western Center Academy High School in Hemet, California, was chosen among a pool of applicants who submitted their innovations via Twitter with the #MasergySTEMscholarship hashtag. Horton’s submission on Twitter attracted the judges’ attention with a focus on helping to research a cure for Alzheimer’s patients. “Krystal’s research demonstrates the extent to which today’s students are focusing on how to develop tomorrow’s groundbreaking solutions,” said James Parker, CEO at Masergy. “We are excited to have the opportunity to support her ongoing research through our STEM contest.” This marks the fourth year of Masergy’s STEM scholarship and the first time the program leveraged social media to expand the opportunities for young innovators to apply. “It’s an honor to be selected for this prestigious award,” said Krystal. “I’m committed to continuing my work on developing innovative technology solutions with real-world applications, and with Masergy’s generous support, I’ll be able to do that.” Horton created a homemade electroencephalograph (EEG) and several other devices to help treat Alzheimer’s Disease based on animal model research by Dr. Li-Huei Tsai at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her EEG was able to measure changes in gamma wave production, and it serves as a proof of concept that may be used for treatments in the future.
