Power utilities operate and maintain their own mission critical telecommunications network infrastructure to manage the electrical grid, ensuring that essential services are delivered without interruption. All network traffic to monitor and control the grid, as well as provide voice and data communications for company operations, runs on an array of equipment from different manufacturers. The diversity of these multi-vendor networks makes managing them extremely complex. Using an overlay network management system that automates and simplifies tasks for network operations personnel significantly improves service quality while reducing costs. Performance management is especially critical as utilities transition from traditional TDM to IP-based networks. It delivers proactive network performance measurements such as packet loss, jitter, latency, and bandwidth for IP networks that can be early indicators of service degradation, while also delivering measurements such as errored seconds and severely errored seconds for TDM networks. The NetBoss Performance system presents these real-time values and also enables historical reports for investigations, as well as future projections for capacity planning.
