Ed Barad Named One of Law Week’s 2017 Lawyers of the Year

December 21, 2017 - Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce that Ed Barad, a shareholder in the firm’s Real Estate Department, was named one of  Law Week Colorado’s Lawyers of the Year for 2017. The distinction by  Law Week is the latest of many professional honors for Ed, including, among others, reaching the top tier of real estate lawyers in Colorado as ranked by  Chambers USA for the last decade, inclusion in  Best Lawyers for the last 13 years and being voted as one of the top 50 and one of the top 100 Lawyers in Colorado by  Super Lawyers. Ed represents institutional and private equity fund investors in entity structuring and commercial real estate, development, acquisition, disposition, finance and workout. He also chairs the firm’s Opinion Letter Committee. Law Week chose Ed as one of its lawyers of the year for his leadership in Colorado’s real estate legal community, his work on high-profile real estate transactions across the country and for his completion of the legal work that enabled the acquisition, development, financing and leasing of a 216,000-square-foot building for Miller Global Properties. The building was partially complete upon acquisition, then completed and leased at the same time through a joint venture with the building’s original developer inside a condominium regime with an adjacent hotel. Ed told  Law Week that it was one of the most complex deals of his career, calling on his, and his team’s, highly specialized knowledge to clear difficult hurdles through every aspect of the project. He also managed lease negotiations, navigated complex post-closing obstacles and negotiated a deal with the adjacent hotel regarding shared parking spaces. Last year, Ed led the disposition of the Loretto Heights campus in Denver and the disposition of 1,200 acres by Denver International Airport for Starwood, which he had represented in development for 15 years. Law Week noted Ed’s reputation as a prolific speaker and writer in the real estate space, including opinion letters and contracts and quoted him saying, “There’s an academic aspect to law that I think you need to have in order to be a strong lawyer, and I think you need to have a friend on the other side that you’re negotiating with.
