Diversity Lab Certifies Cooley for Mansfield Rule 2.0 Plus

Updated program aims to boost diversity of law firm leadership Palo Alto – September 3, 2019 – Diversity Lab has again recognized Cooley as one of 64 law firms to achieve Mansfield Certification after completing the Mansfield Rule 2.0 certification program. Cooley was further distinguished with Mansfield “Plus” status for successfully reaching at least 30 percent diverse lawyer representation in a notable number of current leadership roles and committees. “Ensuring the advancement of women, minority and LGBTQ+ lawyers and staff is a top priority for Cooley,” said Amie Santos, Cooley’s director of diversity and inclusion. “We’ve increasingly focused on establishing open systems and conversations with firm leaders in an effort to put more time, energy and resources into the growth and development of Cooley’s incredible, diverse talent.” The goal of the Mansfield Rule is to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for opportunities. The certification measures whether firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, minority and LGBTQ+ lawyers for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities and senior lateral positions. Cooley will continue participation in the Mansfield Rule program with the launch of Mansfield 3.0, which will include lawyers with disabilities. “Our plan is to raise the bar each year,” said Lisa Kirby, chief intelligence & knowledge sharing officer at Diversity Lab, which is dedicated to boosting diversity in law firms and legal departments. “We follow design thinking principles, so we measure results each year and work with participating firms to iterate the pilot based on the results to ensure we are moving toward our goal of diversifying law firm leadership as inclusively and impactfully as possible.” Cooley often collaborates with organizations and initiatives that support diverse individuals and causes. Earlier this year,  Cooley signed the Business Statement for Transgender Equality, joining the ranks of approximately 180 companies and law firms standing with the transgender community. August marked the end of the inaugural  Law in Technology Diversity Collaborative, in which Cooley partnered with car sharing marketing place Turo to host an intern for the summer. The first-of-its-kind program seeks to expand the pipeline of legal diversity by providing women, underrepresented minorities and other first-year law students with summer internships split between Bay Area tech companies and law firms.
