Disability Rights California Honors Cooley for Dedication to Pro Bono

Palo Alto – June 15, 2016 – Disability Rights California honored Cooley with its Pro Bono Achievement award at its June meeting. Chuck Ehrlich, a member of the DRC board of directors, said Cooley was recognized for its "commitment, dedication and generosity in helping our organization litigate important disability cases." "We at Cooley are proud to partner with DRC to protect the rights of the disabled and underserved," said Cooley pro bono partner Maureen Alger. "We are humbled and honored to receive the organization's Pro Bono Achievement award." DRC and Cooley first collaborated in 2010 when they put together a team of lawyers to stop Sacramento County from proposed budget cuts to its outpatient mental health system. The settlement in Napper v. Sacramento County ensured that some 5,000 adults with significant psychiatric disabilities continued to receive outpatient services from their current providers. In 2015, Cooley advised DRC in Hall v. County of Fresno. Under the proposed settlement with county officials, inmates are no longer denied adequate physical and mental health care. The firm contributed more than 1,000 pro bono hours, representing the work of more than a dozen attorneys. Disability Rights California is a non-profit organization created by the governor in 1978 to protect the rights of people with disabilities. About Cooley LLP Clients partner with Cooley on transformative deals, complex IP and regulatory matters, and high-stakes litigation, where innovation meets the law. Cooley has 900 lawyers across 12 offices in the United States, China and Europe.
