Cooley Recognized for Outstanding Pro Bono Efforts

Palo Alto – June 13, 2018 – The American Bar Association has honored Cooley with its Pro Bono Publico Award for the firm’s dedication to pro bono services for the poor and disadvantaged. The award ceremony will take place August 4 during the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. “We are deeply committed to empowering all individuals to seek justice and opportunity,” said Maureen Alger, Cooley’s pro bono partner. “Equal access to representation is essential to the effective functioning of our legal system. It is heartening to receive this recognition alongside others who share our passion for such important work.” The Pro Bono Publico Awards are the top honors awarded by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service. Over the years, the ABA has spotlighted pro bono efforts of individual lawyers and small and large law firms, government attorney offices, corporate law departments and other institutions in the legal profession. This year, the ABA honored two individuals and two other law firms. Cooley commits three percent of total billable hours annually to pro bono matters, which yielded nearly 53,000 hours of pro bono legal services last year, including work on immigration, LGBTQ rights and voting rights cases. Cooley also advises hundreds of nonprofit organizations on a variety of legal issues. Cooley is a co-founder of the Rural Justice Collaborative – a program of OneJustice that brings regularly scheduled free legal clinics to isolated communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. About Cooley LLP Clients partner with Cooley on transformative deals, complex IP and regulatory matters, and high-stakes litigation, where innovation meets the law.
