Cooley Honored at LCCR’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner

Palo Alto – March 10, 2020 – The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (LCCR) honored Cooley with its James T. Caleshu Award for the firm’s representation of small business owners of color. Cooley lawyer Rachel Boyce was specially recognized for her work with a number of clients in LCCR’s Legal Services for Entrepreneurs program at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. awards dinner in San Francisco. “Now more than ever, we need bold leadership on civil rights,” said Monika Kalra Varma, LCCR’s executive director, in a statement. “We have been deeply moved over the past year by our awardees’ unrelenting advocacy for racial, economic and immigrant justice in California and across the country.” LCCR works to protect and promote the rights of people of color, immigrants and low-income individuals in California. As one of the oldest nonprofit civil rights organizations on the West Coast, its lawyer network has provided free legal representation to communities on the front lines of racial, economic and immigrant justice struggles for more than 50 years. Cooley commits three percent of total billable hours annually to pro bono matters, which yielded 68,000+ hours of pro bono legal services last year, including work on immigration, LGBTQ rights and voting rights cases.
