Brussels – June 17, 2019 – Cooley is expanding its global antitrust & competition team with the addition of Stella Sarma, who joins the firm as special counsel from Latham & Watkins. Sarma will be based in Cooley’s newly launched Brussels office. “Stella is a true competition law and standout merger control authority whose skills add strength and depth to our antitrust & competition practice in Europe,” said Alexander Israel, founding partner of Cooley’s Brussels office. “Her experience and record of success will make her a key asset for our clients. We’re committed to continuing to expand our European reach, and we’ve been eager to add her capabilities to the growing Brussels office.” Following the opening of its multi-award-winning London office in 2015,
Cooley expanded its global capabilities by launching in Brussels earlier this year. Planting roots in the heart of continental Europe enhances the firm’s ability to support the growing needs of clients, particularly with the uncertainty of the Brexit environment. Sarma focuses her practice on managing the global merger control risks and review process for strategic transactions. She has unparalleled experience steering worldwide merger control proceedings in complex cross-border transactions, particularly in the technology and healthcare industries, as well as guiding multijurisdictional antitrust investigations at the European Commission and national levels, especially in the automotive and tech sectors. “I’m eager to contribute to Cooley’s antitrust & competition team’s success and am proud to be part of the firm’s continued international growth,” Sarma said. “The firm’s multiple and diverse strengths and top-notch reputation, paired with its impressive client base, provide a wonderful opportunity to expand my practice.” Sarma, who speaks native Greek and is fluent in English and French, is Greek and Belgian qualified. She earned a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Athens, an LLM in French, European and international law and a DESS in international business law, both from the Pantheon-Assas University, as well as a master’s degree in European law from the College of Europe. Cooley’s global antitrust & competition practice – which handles matters for clients ranging from emerging companies to Fortune 500 corporations in virtually every industry – is consistently recognized by The Legal 500, Chambers and Global Competition Review.
