Cooley Elects Five New Partners for 2014

Palo Alto, Calif. – December 2, 2013 – Cooley LLP announced today that five attorneys have been elected to join the firm's partnership, effective January 1, 2014.  "We're proud to welcome these five very talented attorneys into our partnership," said Joe Conroy, Cooley's CEO. Eric Doherty (Palo Alto) Mr. Doherty's practice focuses on all aspects of the formation and operation of private investment funds, including venture capital, private equity, fund-of-funds, secondary market and other investment advisory business in the United States and internationally. In addition to his fund formation practice, Mr. Doherty represents many fund clients, institutional investors and angel investors in their private, public and secondary market investment transactions. He has also represented a number of emerging growth companies as outside general counsel in financing transactions and on matters of general business and corporate law. Mr. Doherty received his JD from the University of Michigan Law School in 2002, where he was an Articles Editor of the Michigan Law Review. He received his BA from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN in 1995, graduating magna cum laude and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Sarah Guske (Colorado) Ms. Guske's practice focuses on patent litigation, with particular emphasis on software and electronics patent litigation cases. She has recently litigated patents involving selective encryption of MPEG multimedia data for broadcast IPTV; encryption and flow control for streaming data; database systems; telephonic interactive voice recognition systems; graphics chipset design and operation; gaming technologies; television color wheels and digital television technologies. Ms. Guske also has litigation experience involving trademarks, trade dress and unfair competition. In 2012, Ms. Guske was named an "associate to watch" in Colorado by Chambers USA, the only intellectual property associate in the Colorado region to receive this recognition. Ms. Guske received her JD from the University of California, Davis School of Law. Ms. Guske graduated, summa cum laude, from Washington State University with a BS in Electrical Engineering and also graduated, summa cum laude, from Whitworth College with a BA in Physics. Brendan Hughes (Washington, DC) Mr. Hughes is a trademark, copyright and advertising attorney with significant litigation and counseling experience. He has represented clients in a wide range of industries – including consumer product companies, e-commerce businesses, social networking sites, search engines and video game developers – regarding trademark clearance, prosecution, maintenance, and enforcement matters for domestic and international trademark portfolios. In addition, he has represented clients in federal court actions involving claims of trademark infringement and dilution, copyright infringement, trade dress infringement, false advertising and unfair competition, as well as in Trademark Trial and Appeal Board opposition and cancellation proceedings. Mr. Hughes received his JD from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2004, where he served as a member of the Vanderbilt Law Review. He earned a BA from Georgetown University in 1999. Aaron Pomeroy (Colorado) Mr. Pomeroy's tax practice primarily involves planning and structuring cross-border investments, mergers, acquisitions, financings and leveraged buy-outs. He has assisted clients in structuring a wide variety of acquisitions, dispositions and recapitalizations involving both strategic and financial buyers. Mr. Pomeroy's clients range from start-ups and joint ventures to more mature private and public companies. He has also advised both sponsors and investors in domestic and international investment funds. Mr. Pomeroy received his JD from New York University School of Law in 2002. He also earned an MA in Organizational Psychology from Temple University in 1998. Mr. Pomeroy earned a BS in Psychology from Brock University, where he was captain of the university wrestling team. Peyton Worley (New York) Mr. Worley focuses on representing both emerging and established technology and life sciences companies and the venture capital firms and growth capital firms that invest in these companies. Concentrating in corporate and securities law, Mr. Worley assists companies across their entire life cycle, including formation, capital raising, strategic partnerships, leveraged and unleveraged mergers and acquisitions, founder liquidity transactions, IPOs and SEC reporting and compliance. Mr. Worley's clients represent a range of industries, including social, digital media, e-commerce, fin tech, ad tech, enterprise software, network security, gaming, content publishing, biopharmaceuticals, clean tech and life sciences. Mr. Worley earned his JD from Boston University School of Law, graduating magna cum laude in 2001. He graduated summa cum laude with a BA from East Tennessee State University in 1998.
