Cooley Commits to New Pro Bono Sustainability Initiative

Palo Alto – September 17, 2018 – Cooley signed on as a founding member of Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy, making the commitment to provide substantial pro bono legal services to companies and organizations dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts. Launched in conjunction with the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, which brings together leaders from government and business devoted to climate action and commitments, the initiative aims to boost the availability of pro bono legal services for entrepreneurial nonprofits and socially purposed for-profits that are focused on developing and scaling approaches to shape a more sustainable global economy. "As a firm that strives to give generously of our time, talents and resources to the communities in which we practice, Cooley is truly honored to be a founding member of Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy," said Maureen Alger, Cooley’s pro bono partner. "We’re eager to expand our environmental commitments by leveraging our expertise on behalf of more nonprofits in this sector and entrepreneurs whose innovative companies are helping to advance a more sustainable economy." Cooley commits three percent of total billable hours annually to pro bono matters, which yielded nearly 53,000 hours of pro bono legal services last year, including work on immigration, LGBTQ rights and voting rights cases, as well as many other types of matters. Cooley also advises hundreds of nonprofit organizations and low-income entrepreneurs on a variety of legal issues.
