Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers to Join Brownstein

April 21,2023 - Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce that John Suthers will be joining the firm as a shareholder. He will focus on government relations and state attorneys general matters. Suthers has served as mayor of Colorado Springs since 2015. Unable to run again due to term limits, Suthers will finish his second term on June 6. Prior to serving as mayor of Colorado Springs, Suthers was elected Colorado’s attorney general and appointed by President George W. Bush to United States attorney for Colorado. “John’s service to the state of Colorado is tremendous. The experience and leadership he gained throughout his career as a mayor, attorney general and United States attorney are a great match for the work we’re doing for our clients on high-stakes legal and policy issues,” said Rich Benenson, Brownstein’s managing partner. During his time as mayor, Suthers sparked historic infrastructure projects throughout Colorado Springs including improvements to road construction and storm water systems, the City for Champions project and rejuvenating the Colorado Springs airport and downtown. Suthers served as attorney general of Colorado from 2005 to 2015. Under Suthers' leadership, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office earned a national reputation for excellence. In 2001, President Bush appointed Suthers to be United States attorney for Colorado and he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Suthers began his career as a prosecutor and was elected district attorney of the 4th Judicial District, which includes El Paso and Teller counties, in 1988. He also spent a decade in private practice with law firm Sparks, Dix and Enoch. “It’s an honor to have John join our Government Relations team,” said Doug Friednash, chair of Brownstein’s State Government Relations practice. “John intrinsically understands how Colorado politics and government works and will be an asset to our multistate approach. He also joins two other former state attorneys general, Hal Stratton and former Sen. Mark Pryor, who I know are looking forward to working with him in our attorney generals practice group.” “Coming to a firm like Brownstein that is a stalwart fixture in Colorado’s legal industry is a great landing spot for me as I step away from public office. Brownstein has a reputation for solving clients’ most challenging and complex issues and I look forward to joining the talented government relations and litigation teams,” added Suthers. Suthers received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law.
