Coalition of organizations including Speakup wants to enforce the WIV postponement via court

A coalition of journalists, lawyers, civil society organizations and IT and tech companies, including Speakup, is preparing a lawsuit against the Intelligence and Security Services Act (Wiv). The coalition wants the introduction of the law to be postponed Now the introduction of the law is planned on 1 May 2018.  On Wednesday, March 21, the Dutchman could vote for the second (and possibly the last) referendum. The subject? The Intelligence and Security Services Act 2017. Speakup was pleased with the very high attendance, and with the result: the Netherlands voted against. Because, this law really needs to be better! The politics was up and running - but Speakup already announced that we are ready to tackle this 'sleep law' if necessary via the courts. The coalition government has since made minor changes to the law, and reached an agreement about three weeks after the referendum. For example, the retention period for information is shortened to one year instead of three, and there is now twice the possibility of extension. In the Lower House, however, there is division over the law. Last week, the law was debated. Open letter The coalition of companies and agencies will send a letter to the government on Wednesday. In it they ask for the Wiv to be postponed, at least until the changes have also been discussed in parliament. If the law is not postponed, the coalition wants to initiate proceedings against the government. According to the coalition, the Wiv "contains some fundamental problems and is in certain areas contrary to human rights". The coalition consists of privacy watchdogs Bits of Freedom and Privacy First, the Dutch Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, the Dutch Association of Criminal Lawyers, Free Press Unlimited, data center BIT, Internet companies Voys, Speakup and the Platform Protection of Civil Rights. Speakup and the WIV Speakup has already spoken several times against the WIV, and when at the end of 2017 some students started a signing action to request a referendum, Speakup also immediately expressed its support. Speakup is a provider for its customers. We want a safe society, and that is why we are also equipped to neatly meet requests from the judiciary and the police. But we do not want our network to be hacked, whether that happens by a criminal or government agency. Moreover, we find it a bad idea that we as an organization, or one of our employees, can be forced to surrender security keys that can go far beyond the one suspect that a service is looking for. From my perspective, this law actually makes everyone * unsafe *: Our users may not be as well protected as they would like, and we as an organization and our employees can be called upon to bring it about.
