Brownstein Welcomes Lauren Flynn and Maxwell Huntley to its Government Relations Department

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck welcomes Lauren Flynn as a policy director and Maxwell Huntley as a senior policy advisor in the Washington, D.C., office adding appropriations and defense experience to the firm’s bipartisan federal government relations practice.

“The addition of Lauren and Maxwell to the Brownstein team underscores our commitment to addressing our clients’ needs by bringing in-depth knowledge in crucial policy areas, including appropriations, defense and the federal budget,” said Nadeam Elshami, co-chair of Brownstein’s Government Relations Department. “Lauren’s extensive experience in the appropriations process and execution of the federal budget, combined with Maxwell’s strategic insight into defense legislation and funding, strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive and informed bipartisan advocacy.”

During her time on Capitol Hill, Flynn oversaw funding requests as staff director of the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee in both chambers of Congress. She also participated in numerous conference negotiations, including the most recent fiscal year Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) bill. As Sen. John Kennedy’s (R-LA) senior policy advisor, she implemented his Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee priorities. Flynn has negotiated directly with officials at the highest levels of the legislative, executive and judicial branches to enact critical spending bills. She was an appointed deputy assistant secretary to the Department of the Treasury, where she managed the development of the CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program and implemented the department’s appropriations priorities. She also served as an analyst for the Government Accountability Office, drafting reports on financial services and small-business issues and was detailed to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Flynn received her B.S. and M.A. in economics from Virginia Commonwealth University.

During his years on Capitol Hill, Huntley developed close relationships with lawmakers overseeing defense policy and appropriations, including the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Most recently Huntley served as a professional staff member for the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services, managing many of the Department of Defense’s (DOD) top programmatic priorities while playing a key role in crafting the NDAA under Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL). His time working as senior advisor to the current vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Robert Wittman (R-VA), built his deep knowledge of defense, foreign affairs and homeland security policy. He utilizes this experience to help craft government relations strategy around a broad range of military issues including defense tech, unmanned systems, shipbuilding, aircraft systems, electronic warfare, acquisitions policy and the defense industrial base. Huntley also worked with Senate Appropriations Committee Member Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) as his national security advisor where he worked on defense-related appropriations and legislation, including the NDAA. Huntley received a B.A. and MPP from the University of Michigan.
